Description
This horse sculpture is from my personal collection. I purchased it directly from Leon in 2002. All the materials Leon uses are basicand can be formed using hand tools. Leon's mother, Emma Mary Goulet, was his inspiration to keep the past alive by creating works
that are connected to his heritage. The Indians believe the horse is sacred. Blending the horse and man together gives the message
of being sacred with the Creator.
"The figures made from the elk, moose and deer once again live in my hands when I work. I always
think about these beautiful
animals that gave their life for our sustenance.....By making my art I am utilizing the whole animal" says
Leon.
Leon grew up in a family that promoted native culture through song and dance with their family dance group. In 1977-78, he
and his twin brother, Leonard, toured New Zealand dancing in schools and Maori meeting houses. He has also
done some
acting in
movies: the New Wave mini series; X Files; Border Town and Harvest of Festivals (a documentary). There is a
Youtube video showing
Leon with his horse creations. You can put in Leon's full name in google search and it will come up. The last photo is Leon.
The horse is first formed with strong
wire and then wrapped
with rawhide and allowed to dry. Even though they are skeletal figures
you can see the power in his creations. This is certainly a unique and beautiful creation by a native artist with many talents.
