SEALED SOFT LEATHER MEDICINE BAG, DECORATED, SIGNIFICANT AREAS OF DAMAGE TO THE PIECE, CAN BE REPAIRED.
This Medicine Bag is dated at least to the 1970's and could be older.  The Bag is Handmade and Sealed with what appears to be some type of cardboard in the Bag--we will Not open the Bag in order to preserve the purpose of the Medicine Bag, which is to be Permanently Sealed by the Owner.  Since this is a piece that will likely be restored, the new owner can obviously do whatever is desired regarding the Bag.  Well-Made, this light colored Soft leather Bag is 4" x 4 1/2" and 1/4" thick.  It is quite Flat, and the Flap is sewn down with light stitching under the flap.  The craftsmanship is very good with all pieces threaded through the Bag; the Bag is Hand-Stitched around the edging; there is very Good Beadwork with the metal cones being Well-Strung, even though one of the long-hanging chimes is missing.  There is some surface damage to the leather, more so to the back of the Bag.  The Bag must have become wet at some time as there is significant rust and water damage to the leather at the bottom of the Bag where the metal cones are strung.  We have provided many close-up photos of the Bag so you can see the craftsmanship as well as the particular damage to the Bag.  The 4" x 4 1/2" x 1/4" Medicine Bag has a 6" leather strap at the top; the strap is knotted at the top; 6 Glass .5c Tile Beads are at the bottom of each strap--3 on each side--Yellow, Orange and Red. The Medicine Bag is decorated around the entire edging and flap with 1mm Sea Green Glass Pony Beads.  The stitching is not torn.
There is a fully Beaded Design on the bottom front of the Medicine Bag.  The Beads are 1mm Glass Pony Beads and are stitched in a custom, coordinated pattern using Sea Green; Black; Red; Orange and Yellow Beads.  The design is 3 1/4" across at the top of the design; 2" across at the bottom of the design with the design being approx. 2/3" wide.  As shown in the photos, particularly photos #4, #7 and #8, the close-ups show how the Metal Cones have "rusted" onto the lower front areas;
photos #5 and #6 show the rust damage to the lower back around the stitching areas and bottom of the Bag.  The Medicine Bag is also designed at the bottom with Metal Cones and long Metal Chimes decorated with Glass Tile Beads and Bells.  As can be seen in the photos, there is a set of long metal Chimes on the lower right front and back; the coordinated matching long Metal Chimes are missing from the lower left side; there is a small leather strip left in the area missing the piece.  There are 5, approx. 1" long Metal Cones stitched along the lower front and back of the Bag, for a total of 10 Cones; one set of Metal Cones is missing next to where the missing long Chimes should be.  The hole is there where the stitching was, so it can be replaced.  The back row of Metal Cones has what looks to be a miss-matched Metal Cone that may be an attempt at replacement.  All of the Metal Cones and Chimes are dark and show rusting, with a few pieces showing significant rust, and all Metal pieces stick to a magnet.  The one replacement piece is 1" long and probably aluminum--it is a light color, is Not rusted and does Not stick to the magnet.  The long pieces are strung with leather strips.  Each "Chime" is comprised of 2, 2 3/4" long metal pieces with each strand having a Red Glass Tile Bead at the top and center; Yellow Glass Tile Beads are at the bottom of each piece with "dingle" Bells that are tied off.  There is some damage to the knotting on one of the Bells and one top metal Chime is dented.  Please take a look at the photos to get a good look at this item.
