    Description

Old Man Leekya Deyuse (D) hand carved three strand Eagle necklace. Verified.
    Leeyka Deyuse necklace
Leekya Deyuse (Leek-yah Day-you-see), was probably the most well known and one of the finest fetish carvers in the history of Zuni. Born in 1889, Leekya created beautiful fetish necklaces, carved animals (table fetishes) of assorted stones, turquoise figurines and fetishes set in jewelry.
Leekya worked for C.G. Wallace, a well know and influential trader at Zuni for 50 years. Leeyka had 3 children, Frances, Alice and Sarah. His grandchildren and great grandchildren continue to carve today. Some of them are Delvin, Freddie, and Hayes Leekya and Juana Homer, Patrick Homer and Bernard Homer, Jr. Old Man Leekya died in 1966.
This eagle necklace was created circa 1940-50 before electricity came to Zuni Pueblo. Leekya used hand files to create these delicate carvings, as later on in life he could only do larger pieces because of a stroke and the loss of the use of one hand. These birds are made from a variety of delicate Sea Shells; including Pink Mussel Shell, Abalone Shell, Conch Shell and Mother of Pearl Shell. There are 40, perfect, unbroken, mint, shell birds on this like new necklace.
The necklace measures about 26″ long. Each of the 3 strands are slightly different lengths to properly display the birds. The Findings (Clasps) are silver and over the years have taken on a beautiful, metallic blue patina. *** Please note: these bird carvings are fragile. The necklace was made to be worn, but care must be taken or birds will break. Leekya Deyuse died in the 1960’s and I don’t know anyone that can duplicate Leekya’s art.
This necklace was originally sold by Sedona Indian Jewelry to a private collector and can be verified as such. Information & pictures about this necklace is still available on Sedona's website.
